PUBLICATIONS

Since my first peer-reviewed publication on part of my MS work in 2013, I have published 8 first-author papers in as many journals, all of which are listed and linked on my Publications page. I am co-authoring at least two additional papers in preparation from recent research with colleagues.  My PhD work was published in my dissertation in March 2020, and manuscripts are forthcoming. PRESENTATIONS

Since 2011, I have given 30 professional presentations on my research, including two that were awarded Best Professional Presentation, one that was awarded Best Student Presentation, one that was awarded Best Student Poster, and one that was selected as a Best Student Presentation Finalist. I have co-authored an additional 10 presentations. Of the 40 total, 11 were invited presentations.

Venues have included several professional society conferences, including those hosted by the Freshwater Mollusk Conservation Society, the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, the American Fisheries Society, and regional, state, and local chapters of these and other organizations.  For a detailed listing, please download my CV.

TEACHING

I have committed to being an effective teacher by spending time in practice, and by completing over 100 hours of training to earn a Certificate in Teaching and Communication (earned May 2019). In addition to my certificate training, I taught laboratory sections for Freshwater Ecology (AEC 419/519) and for Biology of Fishes (AEC 442) in the Department of Applied Ecology at NC State University (Fall 2016).

I have also developed a course on ecosystem services, given guest lectures on freshwater mollusk ecology and on graduate school, and I served as an Assistant TA for Introduction to Ecology (BO 360) as an senior undergraduate. PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT & OUTREACH

I have given several presentations in the community and to K-12 classroom audiences in an effort to engage with the public on issues of clean water, freshwater biodiversity, and conservation.

Highlights of my public engagement and outreach so far, include:  leading aquatic insect lessons and fish dissections with K-12 schools in cooperation with the NC Museum of Natural Science’s Shad in the Classroom program; bringing freshwater mollusk ecology and conservation issues to classrooms from the Bronx, NY to Hillsborough; NC through the Skype A Scientist Program; publishing an article on the Scientific American Guest Blog about saving rare freshwater snails; and being invited by the NC Museum of Natural Sciences to be the featured speaker for their monthly Science Saturday event in July 2018, where I presented a talk on “Secrets of Streams.”

I also maintain an active social media presence for science communication on Twitter, and I regularly attend community events that promote respect and enjoyment of natural resources (such as the annual Family Fishing Fiesta).
